Google treats buying or selling links for ranking purposes as link spam when those links pass ranking credit. Paid links should be appropriately qualified, so any buying decision needs both quality due diligence and policy awareness.

Paid-link note: Google says paid links should be qualified with rel="sponsored" or nofollow. Buying links for ranking purposes can violate Google’s spam policies when those links pass ranking credit. No marketplace can guarantee rankings.

A buyer-first process

Define why the placement exists, screen for topical relevance, check site quality and traffic, review link-selling behavior, confirm terms, and only then compare the price against alternatives.

  • Define the purpose of the placement before researching sites.
  • Reject irrelevant sites even if their authority metrics look attractive.
  • Review real traffic and ranking patterns.
  • Inspect recent posts and outbound links for obvious selling footprints.
  • Set a maximum price only after estimating likely value.

Separate acquisition method from placement quality

A good publisher can be reached through outreach, a marketplace, an agency or a direct deal. A weak publisher can be reached through all the same channels. Judge the site first and the acquisition method second.

Keep a placement record

For repeat buying, record the publisher, destination URL, anchor or mention, content topic, cost, publication date, link attribute and current status. Rechecking past placements teaches you which sources stay live and which buying patterns create problems.

A practical decision rule

If an opportunity looks attractive only when you hide the site’s topic, traffic pattern and recent publishing behavior and focus on a single authority score, skip it. Strong opportunities should survive a broader review.
